ED Appeals Kejriwal’s Acquittal: High Court Set to Revisit Liquor Policy Case

ED Appeals Kejriwal's Acquittal: High Court Set to Revisit Liquor Policy Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken a significant step by appealing to the Delhi High Court against the recent acquittal of Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), concerning two important cases. These cases revolve around his alleged non-compliance with summons related to the controversial liquor policy in Delhi.

On January 22, a trial court had acquitted Kejriwal, stating that the prosecution had not established that he willfully ignored the summons issued by the ED. However, the ED, undeterred by this ruling, has decided to challenge the acquittal, asserting that Kejriwal’s repeated absences from nine summonses raised serious questions about his accountability and transparency in the matter.

The upcoming hearing before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma is set for Wednesday, where the court will delve into the merits of the ED’s appeal. This legal tussle has kept political circles buzzing, especially given the high stakes involved in the liquor policy case, which has already seen significant political ramifications.

To provide some background, Kejriwal was apprehended by the ED in March 2024 after a lengthy series of summonses related to alleged irregularities in the now-repealed Delhi liquor excise policy. His arrest came during a turbulent phase in Delhi politics, and although he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in July 2024, complications arose when he was re-arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the same ongoing investigation. He eventually secured bail from the Supreme Court in September 2024, but the legal battles continue to unfold.

The liquor policy case has created a storm not just in legal circles but has also become a focal point of political debate in the country. The ED’s appeal to the High Court is poised to escalate tensions between the AAP government and central investigative agencies. Kejriwal has consistently maintained that he is being targeted for political reasons, framing the charges against him as part of a broader narrative of oppression against opposition leaders.

As this case develops, all eyes will be on the judicial proceedings and their implications for governance and accountability in Delhi. The ED’s determination to challenge the trial court’s decision highlights the continuing complexities of this high-profile case, raising questions about political accountability in governance and the role of investigative agencies in political disputes.
