Election Commission Reports Over Rs 400 Crore in Illicit Inducements Seized Ahead of Assembly Elections
In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the seizure of illicit inducements valued at a staggering Rs 408.8 crore in the lead-up to the Assembly elections across five states and Union Territories, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. This alarming figure highlights the persistent challenge of electoral malpractices that continue to threaten the integrity of the democratic process in the country.
The breakdown of these illicit inducements reveals a concerning trend. Among the seized items are Rs 17.4 crore in cash, liquor amounting to Rs 37.6 crore, drugs valued at Rs 167.3 crore, precious metals worth Rs 23 crore, and an assortment of other freebies totaling over Rs 163.3 crore. Such large-scale operations underscore the lengths to which certain entities will go to influence voter behavior and undermine free and fair elections.
On March 24, the Election Commission convened a crucial meeting with various enforcement agencies, chief secretaries, chief electoral officers, and directors general of police from the five states and their twelve neighboring states and Union Territories. This meeting was aimed at reviewing the readiness for the upcoming elections and enhancing inter-agency coordination. The officials were given clear directives to ensure that the electoral process remains “violence-free, intimidation-free, and inducement-free.”
In a bid to facilitate transparency and accountability, the ECI has also introduced the C-Vigil app, which empowers citizens to report electoral violations in real-time. Between March 15 and March 25, an impressive total of 70,944 complaints were filed via this app in the poll-bound regions. Of these, 70,831 have already been addressed, reflecting a swift resolution rate of 95.8%, with most complaints resolved within a mere 100 minutes. This initiative not only encourages civic engagement but also serves as a deterrent against electoral misconduct.
As the Assembly elections approach, the Election Commission’s proactive stance and commitment to a transparent electoral process are crucial. The significant seizures of illicit items serve as a reminder of the ongoing battle against corruption in politics and the importance of safeguarding the democratic process. With the concerted efforts of law enforcement and vigilant citizens, the hope for fair elections in India continues to grow.
