Exploring Relationships Through Numbers: A Critical Look at ‘Maa Ka Sum’

In an ambitious attempt to blend romance with the principles of mathematics, the latest Prime Video series, ‘Maa Ka Sum,’ directed by Nicholas Kharkongor, takes viewers on a rather convoluted journey into the realm of relationships and algorithms. Written by Ravinder Randhawa and Sumrit Shahi, the narrative centers around Agastya, a 19-year-old mathematics whiz, who obsessively seeks to apply mathematical logic to the messy world of love.

Agastya, portrayed by Mihir Ahuja, is determined to find the ideal partner for his mother, Vinita, played by the ever-charismatic Mona Singh. This unique premise sets the stage for a story that promises depth and exploration of familial bonds and the complexities of dependency. However, as the episodes unfold, the series reveals an unsettling dynamic where Agastya’s ambitions overshadow Vinita’s own autonomy. The co-dependent relationship between mother and son is portrayed as almost utopian, but it quickly morphs into a troubling scenario where traditional boundaries are blurred.

One might expect that such a nuanced premise could yield a profound exploration of love and relationships. Unfortunately, the execution falls flat. The script often veers into the territory of excessive exposition, leaving little room for emotional resonance. Throughout the eight-episode series, the writers repeatedly remind viewers of the themes without effectively translating them into genuine emotional experiences. For instance, the assertion, “Good data matched with good analysis always gets good results,” is delivered with a gravity reminiscent of philosophical insights but fails to evoke any real contemplation or connection.

Despite the shortcomings in writing, Mihir Ahuja’s performance stands out. His portrayal of Agastya is both natural and relatable, especially during tender moments with Vinita. The chemistry between Ahuja and Singh is palpable, lending some authenticity to their on-screen interactions. Yet, as the narrative progresses, it becomes increasingly evident that the characters are trapped in a repetitive cycle, and the potential for a rich emotional landscape is squandered by lackluster storytelling.

‘Maa Ka Sum’ attempts to combine the rigid structure of mathematics with the unpredictable nature of human emotions, a concept that could have delighted viewers. However, the series ultimately feels like a missed opportunity, where the initial promise of an innovative exploration of love through logic gives way to a lengthy and often tedious narrative. As audiences tune in for a fresh take on relationships, they may be left yearning for a series that not only intrigues but also resonates on a deeper level.
