Exploring the Complexities of Marriage in Thrity Umrigar's 'Missing Sam'

In her latest novel, ‘Missing Sam’, author Thrity Umrigar delves into the intricacies of marital relationships that are often tested by personal histories and emotional baggage. The story begins with a familiar piece of advice: ‘Don’t ever go to bed angry.’ Yet, the protagonists Samantha O’Malley and Aliya Mirza disregard this wisdom, leading to a shocking turn of events. Following an intense argument, Samantha, or Sam, heads out for a solitary run and mysteriously disappears, setting the stage for a gripping narrative.

However, the core of Umrigar’s story is less about the suspense of Sam’s disappearance and more about the couple’s relationship and the underlying issues that contribute to their turmoil. The narrative examines how their contrasting backgrounds—Sam’s experience as a white Irish-American poet and Ali’s identity as a Brown, Muslim, Indian-American interior designer—shape their perspectives and challenges in their eight-year marriage.

Sam’s upbringing is marked by violence, having been raised by a father who equated public humiliation with unforgivable actions. This past profoundly influences her behavior and expectations within the marriage. On the other hand, Ali’s father exerted strict control over her autonomy under the guise of faith, creating a yearning for freedom that remains unfulfilled. As tensions rise, Ali grapples with feelings of doom, reflecting on how their respective histories collide, leading them further apart.

This exploration of generational trauma and its impact on personal relationships resonates deeply within the Indian context, where familial expectations and societal norms often dictate the terms of love and marriage. Umrigar crafts a narrative that invites readers to reflect on the complexities of identity, the struggle for personal freedom, and the consequences of unresolved conflicts.

‘Missing Sam’ presents a poignant look at how the intricacies of love can be both a source of strength and a breeding ground for discord. The novel challenges readers to consider how well they truly understand their partners and the factors that shape their lives. Amidst the backdrop of an abduction, the story ultimately emphasizes the importance of communication and understanding in nurturing relationships.
