Exploring the Dark Humor of Corporate Life in 'No Other Choice'

A story of ambition and desperation weaves its way through Park Chan-wook’s latest film, No Other Choice, now available on MUBI. The narrative focuses on Man-su, portrayed by the talented Lee Byung-hun, a dedicated executive at a paper company who has basked in the glory of his ‘Pulp Man of the Year’ accolade. With a picturesque life marked by a loving wife, two kids, and a comfortable home, his world is turned upside down when his company falls into American hands, leading to his abrupt layoff.

As the grim reality of his situation sinks in, Man-su makes a promise to his wife, Mi-ri, played by Son Ye-jin, that he’ll soon return to the industry he cherishes. However, the job market proves unyielding, leaving him with no options. Driven by desperation and perhaps a touch of madness, Man-su contemplates an extreme solution to reclaim his status: he decides to eliminate his competition—literally.

No Other Choice offers a unique blend of dark comedy and poignant melancholy, reflecting the often brutal nature of corporate existence. Adapted from Donald E. Westlake’s novel The Ax, the film not only tells a gripping tale of one man’s fall from grace but also invites viewers to question moral boundaries. It’s a complex narrative where the audience finds themselves reluctantly rooting for a protagonist whose actions are anything but noble.

The film has unfortunately slipped under the Oscars’ radar, which is surprising given its depth and artistry. Alongside works like One Battle After Another and Sinners, Chan-wook’s creation is a must-watch for those intrigued by the interplay between ambition, ethics, and the darker shades of human nature.
