Family Fights for Justice: Seafarer's Mortal Remains Stuck in Legal Limbo Following Tragic Missile Strike

The family of a 32-year-old Indian seafarer, Dixit Solanki, who tragically lost his life in a suspected missile strike while working off the coast of Oman, has approached the Bombay High Court in a desperate bid to secure the return of his remains. Solanki was aboard the merchant vessel MT MKD Vyom when the incident occurred on March 1, making him the first Indian casualty since the escalation of conflict in West Asia began on February 28.

According to reports, the ship was hit by what was described as a missile during a tense period marked by heightened military activity in the region. Following the explosion, significant damage was done to the engine room, leading to Solanki’s untimely death. His family is now demanding answers and the timely repatriation of his body, which has been a source of anguish since they received the heartbreaking news of his passing.

On Thursday, Solanki’s father, Amratlal Gokal Solanki, and his sister, Mitali Solanki, filed a petition with the High Court, urging the Union government to expedite the process of returning his remains and to provide comprehensive details regarding the investigation into the attack. They specifically called for forensic records and any materials related to the incident to be shared with them, stressing the need for transparency in a situation that has deeply affected their family.

Amratlal Solanki expressed his frustration over the duration of the process, noting that it has been over 33 days since the tragic event. He stated, “I want answers. All we want is to have my son’s remains returned to us with valid certificates and a complete investigation report.” The petition names several respondents, including the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Directorate General of Shipping, and V Ships India Private Limited, the company that operates the vessel.

This incident highlights not only the dangers faced by Indian seafarers in conflict zones but also the bureaucratic hurdles that families must navigate in the wake of such tragedies. The Solanki family’s plea for justice resonates with many in India, drawing attention to the broader implications of geopolitical strife on the lives of ordinary citizens.

As the family awaits a response from the court, their collective hope remains focused on receiving their loved one’s remains and getting closure after a harrowing ordeal. In a time when the geopolitical landscape is fraught with uncertainty, stories like Dixit Solanki’s remind us of the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for accountability and support for those affected.
