Farmers Seek Support to Transition from Chemical Fertilizers Amid Modi’s Appeal

Farmers Seek Support to Transition from Chemical Fertilizers Amid Modi's Appeal

In a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged farmers to consider reducing their reliance on chemical fertilizers by 25% to 50%. This appeal echoes his previous calls made during national addresses in 2019 and 2025, where he highlighted the need for responsible fertilizer usage. Despite the PM’s good intentions, the reality remains that India’s consumption of chemical fertilizers has surged by 15% over recent years, climbing from 61.4 million metric tonnes to an alarming 70.8 million metric tonnes.

The government’s latest plea comes against the backdrop of rising economic pressures stemming from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. During the same speech, Modi emphasized the prudent use of fuel—a resource that, like fertilizers, is largely imported from regions affected by geopolitical tensions. The premier’s calls for reform also stem from growing concerns regarding the detrimental effects of excessive fertilizer usage on soil health, which has become a pressing issue in agricultural circles.

However, merely encouraging farmers to cut back on chemical fertilizers without providing substantial support in the form of alternative practices may not yield the desired results. Farmers often face significant challenges when attempting to transition from chemical-heavy practices to more sustainable, natural farming techniques. The ingrained habit of relying on chemical fertilizers can lead to decreased yields if not managed carefully, which in turn raises concerns about food security across the nation.

To effectively reduce chemical fertilizer use by 50% without compromising agricultural output, experts advocate for a comprehensive strategy that enhances soil health. This could involve integrating biofertilizers, biodegradable decomposers, organic manure, and soil conditioners into farming practices. Educating farmers on the appropriate rates, dosage, timing, and methods of application for these alternatives is vital to ensure a successful transition.

Additionally, the government must play a proactive role in facilitating this shift. This could be achieved through policy support that includes financial incentives, subsidies for organic farming inputs, and access to training programs for sustainable farming methods. By equipping farmers with the necessary knowledge and tools, the move towards reducing chemical fertilizer dependence can be made more practical and appealing.

As India grapples with the dual challenge of feeding a growing population while preserving its agricultural lands, the call to reduce chemical fertilizers is more pertinent than ever. With the right support from both the government and agricultural experts, farmers can become champions of sustainable practices, ensuring food security for future generations while also safeguarding the health of their soil.
