Gulf Oil Disruption Signals Emerging Global Energy Risk

Strait blockage triggers production cuts despite abundant supply
A significant disruption in global oil movement is unfolding around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. Nearly 20 million barrels per day, accounting for about 20% of global oil consumption, usually pass through this route.
Recent restrictions have caused oil flows to drop by as much as 86%, severely impacting exports from key producers like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Contrary to common assumptions, the crisis is not due to a shortage of oil but a lack of storage capacity.
The UAE alone has reportedly reduced production from around 3.5 million barrels/day to nearly 2 million, as storage facilities reached capacity. Across the region, an estimated 7–10 million barrels per day of output has been temporarily shut down.
Analysts warn that such disruptions mark the early stages of an energy crisis, where supply chain bottlenecks — not scarcity — trigger global market instability and potential price volatility
