IMD Warns of Increased Heatwave Days Across Eastern and Central India This Summer

As the summer months approach, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating a significant rise in heatwave days across various regions of eastern, central, northwestern, and southeastern India from April to June. This alarming prediction comes as the country prepares for the sweltering heat typical of its summer season.

The IMD’s latest monthly weather outlook emphasizes that while certain parts of the country may experience maximum temperatures that are ‘normal to below normal,’ the forecast for the aforementioned regions suggests a troubling trend of above-normal heatwave occurrences. The department highlights that this year could witness an unusually high number of heatwave days, particularly impacting states like Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh, along with isolated areas in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

Furthermore, the IMD has noted that minimum temperatures across the country are expected to remain above normal, except in specific regions of Maharashtra and Telangana, where they are anticipated to hover around normal or even dip below. April is projected to bring about a mix of temperatures, with several locations witnessing maximum temperatures that may either align with or fall below average levels. However, this will not apply uniformly as regions in eastern and northeastern India, along with parts of the southern peninsula, are poised for heightened maximum temperatures.

This forecast is particularly concerning given the recent trends observed in temperature fluctuations during the summer months in India. The devastating effects of heatwaves not only pose a risk to public health, leading to heat-related illnesses and complications, but they also impact agriculture, water supply, and overall economic stability in affected regions. Farmers, in particular, may face challenges, as heat stress can adversely affect crop yield and livestock health.

The IMD’s announcement serves as a crucial reminder for citizens and authorities alike to prepare for the impending heat. It urges individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, especially in regions identified as likely hotspots for heatwaves. Staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours, and ensuring proper care for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, are essential actions to mitigate the impact of this expected rise in temperatures.
