India Aims for Constructive Engagement with New Bangladeshi Government, Says S. Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed India’s commitment to fostering constructive dialogue and strengthening ties with the newly formed government in Bangladesh. This announcement came during a meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi on April 8, 2026.
During this pivotal meeting, which also included Humayun Kabir, the foreign affairs adviser to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, both sides explored various avenues to enhance their bilateral relationship. The discussions focused on leveraging existing mechanisms to deepen cooperation, with plans for follow-up meetings on the horizon, as confirmed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Jaishankar took to social media to share insights from the meeting, noting that they engaged in discussions not only on strengthening bilateral relations across diverse sectors but also on regional and global developments. He emphasized the importance of maintaining close communication between the two nations, stating, “Pleased to host FM Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh and his delegation this afternoon. We discussed strengthening our bilateral relationship in its various facets. Also exchanged views on regional and global developments. Agreed to remain in close touch.” This sentiment underscores the mutual interest in maintaining a robust partnership.
Additionally, the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister reiterated a request for India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been residing in New Delhi since her removal from power in August 2024. This request reflects the ongoing complexities in Bangladesh’s political landscape and the desire of the new government to navigate international relations in a manner that aligns with its “Bangladesh First” policy.
While both nations are eager to build on their historical ties, some Bangladeshi officials indicated that broadening relations may face challenges. The evolving political scenario in Bangladesh is poised to shape the nature and pace of future engagements with India. As both countries explore opportunities for deeper collaboration, it remains essential for them to address and navigate the sensitivities that accompany such diplomatic discussions.
