India Condemns Attack on Cargo Ship Bound for Kandla Amid Escalating Tensions

In a concerning development on Wednesday, India raised alarms over an attack on a Thai-flagged cargo vessel heading for the Kandla port, reportedly struck by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident highlights the growing dangers to commercial shipping in a region already fraught with geopolitical tensions.

The ship, identified as the Mayuree Naree, was reportedly hit by two unidentified projectiles while navigating through the crucial waterway off the coast of Oman. Precious Shipping, the operator of the vessel, confirmed the attack, which Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later acknowledged as targeting the ship. The Strait of Hormuz, known as one of the world’s busiest oil chokepoints, has become a focal point of conflict, particularly since Iran has increased its military presence there.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has made it clear that such attacks on commercial shipping are unacceptable. In a statement, the MEA expressed its dismay, stating, “India deplores the fact that commercial shipping is being made a target of military attacks in the ongoing conflict in West Asia.” The ministry emphasized the importance of protecting civilian lives and ensuring the safety of crew members, many of whom could be Indian citizens.

In light of the current situation, the MEA reiterated the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce in international waters. It said, “Targeting commercial vessels and endangering innocent lives should be avoided at all costs.” As tensions escalate, the international community watches closely, concerned about the implications for global trade and security.

Interestingly, this incident draws attention to the broader challenges faced by shipping industries navigating through volatile regions. As the conflict continues, the risk of further attacks looms, raising questions about the future of maritime operations in the area.
