India Suspends Customs Duty on 40 Petrochemical Products Amid Ongoing Conflict in West Asia

In a strategic move to mitigate the impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Union government of India has announced a complete waiver of customs duties on approximately 40 petrochemical products. This temporary measure, effective until June 30, aims to ensure the continuous availability of essential petrochemical inputs for domestic industries, reduce cost pressures on downstream sectors, and maintain supply stability across the nation.

The announcement, made by the Ministry of Finance on Thursday, includes crucial products such as polypropylene, polystyrene, polyols, polybutadiene, styrene butadiene, and anhydrous ammonia. The decision comes in light of significant supply disruptions that have plagued the petrochemical sector since the onset of the conflict.

India, while it does have local production capabilities for some petrochemical products using liquefied petroleum gas and ethane, is largely dependent on imports for these valuable derivatives. As tensions escalated in the region, particularly following the blockade of the vital Strait of Hormuz by Iran, the Indian government swiftly invoked the Essential Commodities Act of 1955. This legislation mandates domestic oil refiners to prioritize the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a move aimed at ensuring that energy supplies remain secure for the country.

On March 4, the Centre directed all oil refining companies to maximize the utilization of propane and butane to enhance LPG production, a response to the energy supply chain disruptions that began on February 28 due to the escalating conflict. The situation has put immense pressure on India’s energy security, as approximately 20% of the world’s petroleum supply transits through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a critical chokepoint for global energy trade.

As a result of the conflict, not only has the availability of petrochemical products been jeopardized, but also the prices of essential goods in the downstream sectors have faced upward pressure. The government’s proactive measures, including the suspension of customs duties, reflect a broader strategy to stabilize the domestic market and safeguard the interests of consumers and industries alike. In a time of uncertainty, these moves are seen as vital in ensuring that India can navigate through the complexities of international supply chains while fortifying its economic resilience.
