Indian Students Abroad: Australia’s Growing Appeal and the Rise of Overseas Education

Indian students form one of the largest groups in global education, with over 18.8 lakh Indians studying abroad in 2025 across 153 countries. Australia remains a top destination, hosting around 130,000–140,000 Indian students, making India the second-largest source country. Overall, Australia had over 8.3 lakh international students in 2025, highlighting its strong global education appeal.
The growth is driven by quality education, post-study work rights, and migration opportunities. However, recent policy changes, including visa restrictions and intake caps of about 2.7–2.95 lakh new students annually, have slowed new enrolments.
Despite these challenges, Australia continues to attract Indian students due to strong career prospects. Overseas education remains a key pathway for global exposure and economic mobility. Additionally, rising middle-class income, easier access to education loans, and increasing global skill demand are encouraging more Indian students to pursue international education opportunities each year.
Furthermore, Australian universities offer diverse courses, strong industry connections, and multicultural environments that help students build global networks. Scholarships, part-time work options, and practical learning approaches also make Australia an attractive destination, ensuring long-term career growth and international exposure for Indian students.
