Iran Conflict Triggers Surge in Medical Supply Costs in India

In a troubling development for the healthcare sector in India, the ongoing conflict in Iran is causing a significant rise in the prices of vital medical supplies. Sanjeev Relhan, a manufacturer based in Visakhapatnam, specializes in producing surgical gowns and protective gear essential for healthcare professionals handling infectious patients and performing surgeries. In recent days, Relhan has been compelled to hike the price of his gowns from Rs 80 to Rs 120, reflecting a staggering 50% increase. This move has been driven by the soaring costs of non-woven fabric, which is critical for the production of these medical garments.

The escalation in prices is not an isolated case. The global supply chain for many medical products in India is being disrupted due to the Iran conflict, particularly the war involving Israel and the United States. The conflict has led to a significant reduction in the production of petrochemicals, as key plants have cut back on operations due to dwindling gas supplies. As a result, non-woven fabric, made from polypropylene — a polymer derived from petroleum — is now in short supply, creating a ripple effect across various medical supply sectors.

In Faridabad, another company that supplies crucial medical items such as disposable syringes, catheters, IV cannula, and dialysis products has raised prices by 5% to 25%. The increases in costs are not limited to disposable items; companies manufacturing dental implants in Punjab have also been forced to raise prices, attributing the surge to escalating costs of titanium, another essential material impacted by the ongoing conflict.

The conflict’s ramifications extend beyond medical supplies. The war has already shaken the global supply of crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas, leading to increased freight costs and making imports significantly more expensive. Iran’s blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for oil, has further exacerbated the situation. As a result, Indian hospitals and healthcare facilities are bracing for a potential rise in their operational costs, impacting the overall affordability of healthcare.

Industry experts warn that if the situation in Iran does not stabilize soon, healthcare costs in India could continue to escalate, making it increasingly challenging for institutions to maintain accessible healthcare services. As the healthcare sector grapples with these pressures, the need for alternative sourcing strategies and cost management solutions becomes imperative. The cascading effects of this international conflict serve as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of global markets and the challenges that arise from geopolitical tensions.
