Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Inquiry; Congress Calls Out Centre's Retreat on Women's Reservation

In a significant turn of events, Justice Yashwant Varma has stepped down from his position at the Allahabad High Court amidst an ongoing investigation into allegations of unaccounted cash found in his residence. The resignation was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, just as the process for his impeachment was gaining momentum. The controversy surrounding Varma is particularly alarming, given that unaccounted cash was reportedly uncovered at his official residence in Delhi after emergency responders arrived to combat a fire there on March 14, 2025. At that time, Varma was serving as a judge at the Delhi High Court.

The Union government has been awaiting the findings of a three-member committee constituted under the 1968 Judges Inquiry Act, which was established by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on August 12. Varma’s case raises critical questions about accountability and transparency within the Indian judiciary, as it highlights the tension between legal norms and personal integrity.

In a related political discourse, the Indian National Congress has sharply criticized the Modi government’s apparent reversal on the implementation of the women’s reservation law in Parliament. According to Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, Prime Minister Modi has shifted his stance on the timeline for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which mandates a 33% reservation for women, reportedly due to apprehensions about the ruling party’s prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections. This perceived U-turn has sparked concerns over the government’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

As the political landscape evolves, the Congress party has taken a firm stand, accusing the government of prioritizing electoral gains over long-term policy commitments. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was initially met with enthusiasm, signaling a potential breakthrough in representation for women in governance. However, Ramesh’s remarks suggest that the government is now wavering, influenced by the looming electoral context and fears of electoral backlash.

In a broader context, the incidents surrounding Justice Varma and the debate on women’s reservation underscore the dynamic nature of Indian politics and governance. While judicial accountability is under scrutiny, the fight for women’s rights continues to face hurdles, revealing the complexities of Indian democracy as it grapples with issues of integrity, representation, and power.
