K Annamalai, a prominent figure in Indian politics, has officially stepped down from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the party announcing the acceptance of his resignation on Friday, according to reports from ANI. This unexpected move has ignited speculation that Annamalai may be gearing up to establish his own political party.
The former state president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu has yet to provide a detailed statement regarding his resignation. However, he did hint at discussing his future plans openly in the near future during a press interaction earlier this week. His departure from the BJP comes on the heels of a disappointing performance by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the recent Assembly elections.
In the elections held on May 4, the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, made headlines by emerging as the single-largest party in Tamil Nadu, securing 108 seats. Despite this impressive debut, TVK fell short of a majority, which requires a minimum of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly. In contrast, the ruling Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Congress, and several Left parties, claimed victory with 73 seats. The NDA, which consists primarily of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the BJP, could only manage 53 seats, with the AIADMK winning 47 seats and the BJP merely one.
Following the elections, on May 10, Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, forming a coalition government with support from Congress, two Left parties, and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. This coalition marks a significant political shift, as it represents the first government in nearly six decades not led by either the DMK or AIADMK.
Annamalai’s political journey has been quite notable. Before entering politics, he served as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from 2011 until his voluntary retirement in 2019. His transition from a law enforcement officer to a political leader has marked him as a significant player in Tamil Nadu politics. With his resignation from the BJP, many are curious to see how his next political chapter unfolds and whether he will indeed launch a new party.
