Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy Resigns Over Portfolio Discontent

In a surprising turn of events just two days after the new cabinet led by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar assumed office, Ramalinga Reddy, a senior Congress leader and MLA, has stepped down from his ministerial role. His resignation came as a result of dissatisfaction with the portfolio assigned to him. Initially appointed as the Minister for Irrigation, Reddy openly expressed his disappointment during a press conference, stating that he had been led to believe he would be in charge of the Bengaluru Development Department, a portfolio that was ultimately given to party colleague Krishna Byre Gowda.

Reddy, who has been a prominent figure in Karnataka politics, emphasized that he had not sought any specific ministerial position, reiterating his commitment to the Congress party over his 53-year career. “I’ve never asked anyone for a ministerial position,” he remarked, underscoring his long-standing loyalty to the party. His previous role as the Transport Minister in the Siddaramaiah government saw him managing critical transportation issues across the state since May 2023.

During the press briefing, Reddy conveyed that his primary concern was the inability to effectively serve his constituents. He mentioned discussions with Shivakumar, where he expressed that he “cannot go to the village and work” under the current circumstances, leading to a call for a reassessment of his responsibilities. Chief Minister Shivakumar, in response to Reddy’s resignation, described him as a “great friend” and indicated that they would work towards resolving the matter amicably.

Reddy represents the BTM Layout constituency, where he has been elected since 2008, and previously served the Jayanagara constituency from 1989 to 2008. His political journey has been marked by significant contributions to local governance and community development. Reddy’s decision to resign raises questions about the internal dynamics within the Congress party, especially in light of the recent cabinet formation and the competitive political landscape in Karnataka.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by newly formed governments in managing expectations within party ranks, particularly in states where coalition politics are prevalent. As Karnataka’s political environment evolves, the resolution of such disputes will be crucial in ensuring stability and effective governance.
