Kerala Assembly Elections: A Alarming 38% of Candidates Face Criminal Charges

As the political landscape heats up in Kerala ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, a startling report reveals that 38% of the 863 candidates vying for a seat have disclosed criminal cases against them. This revelation comes from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting electoral reform in India.

In a comparative analysis with the previous Assembly elections held in 2021, the current figures show that the percentage of candidates with criminal records remains consistent. Back then, 38% of the 928 candidates reported similar issues. However, this time, the situation appears to have worsened regarding serious offenses, with 23% of candidates—201 in total—having declared serious criminal charges against them, up from 18% in 2021.

When examining party affiliations, the Congress party has the highest concentration of candidates with criminal records. A staggering 85% of Congress candidates—72 out of 85—have reported such cases. The Indian Union Muslim League follows closely behind, with 84% of its candidates, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has 66% of its candidates facing allegations. The Bharatiya Janata Party has also shown a concerning trend, with 63% of its candidates having declared criminal cases. Other parties, such as the Communist Party of India and Kerala Congress, have also reported significant percentages of candidates with criminal histories.

Moreover, when it comes to serious criminal charges, the Congress party again leads the pack, with 71% of its candidates indicating serious allegations. This raises questions about the integrity and accountability of political candidates in Kerala, a state known for its vibrant democracy and engaged electorate. The implications of such a high number of candidates with criminal backgrounds could significantly impact voter confidence and the overall electoral process.

This trend of candidates with criminal cases is not a new phenomenon but highlights a persistent issue within Indian politics. The revelations serve as a call to action for voters, urging them to scrutinize the backgrounds of the candidates they support. As the election day approaches, it remains crucial for the electorate to be informed and make choices that reflect their values and aspirations for a cleaner, more transparent political environment.
