Kerala Police Takes Action Against Social Media Platform X for Defamatory AI Video of Modi

The Kerala Police have initiated legal proceedings against the social media platform X and a specific user for circulating an artificial intelligence-generated video that allegedly misrepresents Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission. The move comes against the backdrop of the Model Code of Conduct being enforced ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

According to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI), the police’s action was prompted after the video was flagged through official channels, including direct communication from the Election Commission. Authorities assessed that the video could potentially mislead the public, undermine the integrity of constitutional bodies, and disrupt the process of conducting free and fair elections.

The police have registered a case against the account belonging to a user identified as “Laxmi N Raju (@valiant_Raju)” along with X Corp at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram. This step underscores the seriousness with which the Kerala Police are treating misinformation, particularly during an election period when the integrity of information is crucial.

This incident highlights the growing concerns surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in creating misleading content. With elections approaching, the dissemination of false information can have significant ramifications, influencing voter perceptions and choices. The police have expressed that their proactive stance is aimed at maintaining electoral integrity and public trust.

The proactive measures by the Kerala Police come in the wake of the Election Commission’s strict guidelines aimed at ensuring fair conduct during elections. As technology continues to evolve, the challenge of regulating the digital landscape and combating misinformation becomes increasingly complex. Such incidents prompt a broader discussion about accountability on social media platforms and the responsibilities of users in sharing content.
