The Kodappamund Channel, a watercourse that flows through parts of Ooty before reaching Ooty Lake, has become the focus of growing environmental concern among local residents and conservation advocates.
According to environmental activists, the approximately 5.5-kilometre channel originates near the upper slopes around Mel Kodappamund and passes through sections of Ooty town before draining into Ooty Lake. They say the channel plays an important role in local storm-water drainage and the area’s natural water system.
Residents and environmental groups have expressed concern over the accumulation of waste, plastic, and other pollutants in parts of the channel. They argue that continued dumping of garbage and untreated waste could adversely affect nearby water bodies and local ecosystems.
Environmental advocates are calling for improved waste management, regular cleaning, and stronger public awareness efforts to protect the channel and surrounding natural resources.
They also stress that preserving local waterways is important for maintaining the environmental health of Ooty, the Nilgiris region, and the broader Western Ghats ecosystem.
The issue has renewed discussions about environmental responsibility and the long-term impact of pollution on future generations.
