Maharashtra Government Launches Rs 36,585 Crore Farm Loan Waiver Scheme to Aid Farmers

The Maharashtra Cabinet has officially given the green light to a significant farm debt relief initiative aimed at alleviating the financial burdens of farmers across the state. Announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during the state Budget presentation in March, the scheme, aptly named the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karjamukti Yojana, will provide loan waivers of up to Rs 2 lakh for farmers who meet specific eligibility criteria.

This ambitious scheme comes with a budget allocation of Rs 36,585 crore and is projected to benefit approximately 55.72 lakh farmers who are struggling with agricultural debts. The initiative consists of three key components: complete loan waivers, one-time settlement options, and incentive benefits for those farmers who have been diligent in repaying their loans on time.

The first aspect of the scheme addresses farmers with outstanding crop loans of up to Rs 2 lakh that were overdue as of September 30, 2025, and remain unpaid as of March 31 of this year. Eligible farmers will receive a complete waiver on these loans, providing them critical relief from their financial troubles. Notably, the scheme will be accessible to farmers irrespective of the size of their landholdings, ensuring that even smaller plot owners are not left behind.

For farmers who carry crop debts exceeding Rs 2 lakh, the one-time settlement component will come into play. These farmers will have until March 31, 2027, to repay the amount that surpasses the Rs 2 lakh threshold. Upon successful repayment, the government will waive the outstanding debt up to Rs 2 lakh, further encouraging farmers to settle their dues.

The final component of the scheme focuses on incentivizing timely loan repayments. Farmers who have been proactive in managing their debts will be eligible for additional financial benefits, aiming to promote a culture of fiscal responsibility within the agricultural community. This multi-faceted approach not only seeks to provide immediate relief but also aims to empower farmers by encouraging them to maintain their financial commitments.

As Maharashtra continues to grapple with the challenges posed by agricultural distress, this loan waiver initiative is expected to be a lifeline for many farmers, helping them regain their footing in a fluctuating economy. The state government hopes that by alleviating some of the financial pressures, farmers can focus more on sustainable farming practices, ultimately contributing to a more resilient agricultural sector in Maharashtra.
