Manipur CM Initiates Dialogue with Kuki-Zo Council to Build Trust and Restore Peace

In a significant move towards reconciliation, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that his government has begun discussions with the Kuki-Zo Council, marking the first formal engagement between the state and the Kuki-Zo groups since the onset of ethnic violence in May 2023. This dialogue is perceived as a crucial first step to mend the fractured relationships among the state’s diverse ethnic communities and is aimed at fostering peace.

The meeting, held on Saturday, has been termed an ‘ice-breaking session’ by the Kuki-Zo Council. During this initial dialogue, the Council emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, particularly between the Kuki and Tangkhul communities. This plea for peace underlines a broader aspiration to cultivate a more harmonious environment in Manipur, which has been marred by conflict.

One of the pivotal issues raised during the talks was the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the buffer zone until an official political settlement is reached. The Kuki-Zo Council also underscored the necessity for justice for those affected by the violence, highlighting that ensuring justice is vital for any sustainable peace initiative. This call for accountability resonates deeply within the community, as many families are still grappling with the repercussions of the turmoil.

Moreover, the discourse touched upon the need to accelerate the Suspension of Operations talks, which were originally established to facilitate dialogue between the Centre, the Manipur government, and two prominent Kuki militant groups—the Kuki National Organisation and United Peoples Front. This agreement, initially signed in 2008 and renewed as recently as September, aims to prevent hostilities between the security forces and the militants, creating a conducive atmosphere for peace talks.

The Kuki-Zo Council’s participation in this dialogue reflects a collective desire for stability and constructive engagement. As the state continues to navigate the complexities of inter-ethnic relations, the outcome of these discussions could pave the way for a new chapter in Manipur’s tumultuous history, fostering a spirit of cooperation among its diverse communities.
