Manipur Police Clarify Kanglatongbi Bridge Incident Amid NH-2 Shutdown Tensions

Imphal | April 10, 2026
Amid heightened tensions following a shutdown call along National Highway-2 (NH-2) by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), the Manipur Police has issued a detailed clarification regarding an incident that occurred on the night of April 8 at Kanglatongbi Bridge.
According to official sources, the incident took place around 9:30 PM when two vehicles—a Chevrolet Cruze (WB-06C-7444) carrying three occupants from the Kangpokpi side and an Alto car with a single occupant from the Sekmai side—arrived at the bridge. The individuals had reportedly gathered to exchange vehicles and conduct a test drive.
During the process, the Chevrolet Cruze met with a minor accident and fell into a nearby nullah. Security personnel stationed at a naka point near Kanglatongbi Hindi High School promptly rushed to the scene and provided assistance.
However, the situation escalated shortly afterward when the accompanying Alto car approached the naka at high speed. Police stated that the driver ignored repeated signals to stop and nearly struck security personnel on duty. Upon noticing the presence of law enforcement, the vehicle allegedly attempted to flee towards Kangpokpi.
Considering the perceived threat and suspicious behavior, security personnel fired controlled rounds aimed at the tyres in an effort to immobilize the vehicle. Despite these measures, the car continued to escape.
Authorities later confirmed that the driver of the Alto, identified as Lenkhogin Tuboi, sustained bullet injuries during the incident. He was immediately rushed to Mission Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Chevrolet Cruze, Janggingen Khongsai (21), was detained at the scene and later handed over to G. Saparmeina Police Station. After completing necessary legal formalities, he was released. Police have registered an FIR, and further investigation is underway.
In its statement, the Manipur Police emphasized that the use of force was measured and carried out in response to the perceived threat, attempted evasion, and risk posed to personnel on duty. Authorities also urged the public not to be misled by unverified or misleading information circulating about the incident.
The clarification comes at a sensitive time, as the shutdown call by COTU has already heightened tensions along NH-2. Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining transparency and ensuring public safety while preventing the spread of misinformation.
