Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY: Health Coverage and Access to Healthcare Services

New Delhi: Ayushman Bharat, introduced in September 2018, is a national healthcare programme aimed at improving access to healthcare services for eligible beneficiaries. The programme includes the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which provides health coverage for eligible families, along with initiatives focused on strengthening primary healthcare.

Under PM-JAY, eligible families can receive health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for eligible secondary and tertiary hospitalisation expenses, subject to the scheme's applicable terms and conditions.

The scheme is jointly financed by the central and state governments, with healthcare services provided through empanelled public and private hospitals across India.

While government healthcare schemes can help improve access to treatment for economically vulnerable sections of society, awareness and ease of access remain important factors in ensuring that eligible beneficiaries can use the available benefits.

Applicants and beneficiaries may face difficulties related to documentation, registration or understanding the application process. Simplifying procedures and improving awareness can help eligible beneficiaries access healthcare services more efficiently.

Beneficiaries are advised to verify their eligibility, required documents and scheme-related information through official government channels before applying or seeking benefits.
