Special Report: Wildlife Rescue and Daylight Bank Robbery Bring Baleswar's Border Security Into Focus

Bhubaneswar / Baleswar, 08/09/2026: Baleswar district witnessed two separate incidents on Tuesday — one involving the rescue of wildlife and another involving a daylight bank robbery — bringing renewed attention to security and enforcement challenges in the district.

The district had recently drawn attention following the reported rescue of five orangutan infants from Bichitrapur forest. Forest officials are investigating how the animals reached the area and whether the incident is connected to any wider wildlife trafficking network.

Hours later, the focus shifted to a bank branch in Baliapal, where armed criminals reportedly looted Rs 10 lakh from the Odisha Gramya Bank branch at Khaprapada during banking hours.

Repeated Target, Changing Modus Operandi

The Khaprapada branch has reportedly been targeted several times in recent years. According to available police records, this was the third robbery in seven years and the second in under two years at the branch.

Earlier incidents reportedly involved overnight break-ins targeting the strong room and other infrastructure. In the latest incident, however, the attackers allegedly entered the branch during working hours and threatened staff and customers before fleeing with cash.

A senior police official said the change in the manner of the crime was being examined as part of the investigation.

Border Location Under Investigation

Baleswar is located close to the West Bengal border, and investigators are examining whether the geographical location has any relevance to the movement of suspects in the bank robbery case.

At present, there is no official confirmation establishing a direct connection between the Bichitrapur orangutan case and the Baliapal bank robbery. Both incidents are being investigated separately by the concerned authorities.

Police have formed two special teams to investigate the Baliapal bank robbery, while the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has also been alerted regarding the Bichitrapur orangutan case.

Focus on Enforcement and Investigation

The two incidents have brought attention to the need for effective enforcement against wildlife trafficking as well as stronger security measures at financial institutions located in areas close to inter-state borders.

Further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding both incidents and identify those responsible.
