Balilesa Temple: A Glorious Symbol of Nalbari’s Historical Heritage
Nalbari, Assam: The Shri Shri Kali Temple, located in Balilesa village in Nalbari district, Assam, is an important symbol of the region’s historical and religious heritage. Associated with local traditions and religious beliefs, the temple continues to hold a special place in the hearts of devotees.
According to local beliefs and historical accounts, the temple was built during the reign of Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha (1718–1744). The temple houses an approximately 18-inch-tall idol of Goddess Kali made of eight metals.
Historical accounts suggest that Vishnu Dol and Shiva Dol also existed at the site. However, the earthquake of 1897 reportedly caused considerable damage to the temple structures. The historic Kali Pukhuri, associated with the temple, is another notable feature of the area.
Situated on the bank of the Pagladia River, approximately seven kilometres southeast of Nalbari town, the temple is an important religious destination. Its historical significance and cultural traditions make it a part of Assam’s heritage.
