BJP’s Ameet Satam Demands Criminal Action Against Illegal Hoardings In Mumbai

Illegal hoardings and banners have reportedly increased across several prominent locations in Mumbai during the festive season, prompting Mumbai BJP president and MLA Ameet Satam to seek strict action from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Satam has written to Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, calling for a comprehensive and transparent policy to regulate authorised advertising and curb illegal hoardings across the city.

He also urged the civic administration to take strict legal action, including filing criminal cases against those responsible for putting up unauthorised hoardings and banners. Satam said such structures not only affect Mumbai’s appearance but can also create serious safety concerns.

As part of his proposal, Satam suggested that the BMC could permit standardised advertising boards on electricity poles and lease these spaces through a transparent system. According to the proposal, this could also help generate additional revenue for the civic body.

Satam called for a joint meeting involving the Mayor, BMC administration and other stakeholders to establish a time-bound policy for authorised advertising and ensure the quick removal of illegal structures.

The demand comes shortly after Mayor Ritu Tawde announced a citywide drive against illegal posters, banners, hoardings and promotional stickers placed on bridges, flyovers and monorail pillars following Ganeshotsav.

According to the report, the BMC removes an estimated 15,000–20,000 unauthorised hoardings every year, with nearly 45% reportedly linked to birthday greetings for political leaders and festive celebrations.
