New Delhi Declaration Unanimously Adopted at 18th BRICS Summit, India’s Diplomatic Role Highlighted
New Delhi: The 18th BRICS Summit, held under India’s chairmanship in New Delhi, witnessed the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the adoption after the conclusion of the first day’s discussions, stating that no member country raised an objection to the declaration.
The consensus came amid differing strategic and geopolitical positions among BRICS members on several international issues, including the situation in West Asia. Despite these differences, the member countries reached common ground and approved the joint declaration.
India’s Role in Building Consensus
Negotiations on the declaration continued for several hours as member countries discussed sensitive issues and worked towards mutually acceptable language. India maintained consultations with the participating countries during the process and worked towards building consensus on the final document.
The West Asia situation remained one of the challenging issues in the discussions, given the different regional and strategic interests of BRICS members. The eventual agreement on a joint declaration reflected the members’ decision to maintain cooperation despite differences on certain issues.
Focus on Global Institutional Reforms
Addressing the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need to reform global institutions to reflect the changing international environment. He called for greater representation, responsiveness and reforms in global decision-making structures.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the Global South has a meaningful role in the development of future technologies and in shaping the rules governing them.
From Commitments to Implementation
The New Delhi Declaration sets out areas of cooperation and shared commitments among BRICS members. The focus now shifts towards translating these commitments into practical outcomes through continued cooperation among member countries.
The unanimous adoption of the declaration represents an important outcome of the summit and underlines the effort to maintain dialogue and cooperation within the expanded BRICS grouping despite differences on international and regional issues.
