Dhinidhi Desinghu Wins Bronze at Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games
Dakar, November 2: Indian swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu has created history by winning a bronze medal at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, being held in Dakar, Senegal.
A new chapter has been added to the history of Indian swimming. Dhinidhi Desinghu, a young swimmer from Bengaluru, secured third place in the women's 100-metre freestyle final held on Monday. With this achievement, she became the first Indian female swimmer to reach a final at the Youth Olympic Games.
In a closely contested final, Dhinidhi clocked a personal-best time of 56.27 seconds to claim the bronze medal. Ana Bobanovic of Croatia won gold with a time of 55.89 seconds, while Alyssa Lawson of New Zealand secured silver in 56.13 seconds. Dhinidhi had earlier qualified for the final after recording 56.80 seconds in the heats and improved her performance in the final.
Dhinidhi's journey in swimming has been inspiring. At the age of six, she reportedly had a strong fear of water. With encouragement and support from her parents, she gradually overcame that fear and developed a passion for swimming.
She also represented India at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she was the youngest member of the Indian contingent. Following her bronze-medal performance in Dakar, Dhinidhi said that improving her personal timing had been her primary focus. She dedicated the achievement to her parents and expressed hope that the success would motivate her towards her ultimate goal of winning an Olympic medal in the future.
Her achievement is an encouraging moment for Indian swimming and is expected to inspire more young athletes to pursue the sport at the international level.
