Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari Inaugurates Shravan Mela at Tarakeswar, Announces Major Pilgrimage Development Initiatives

Tarakeswar, Hooghly | July 15, 2026

The annual Shravan Mela at the sacred Tarakeswar Dham was formally inaugurated on Tuesday, July 14, by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, marking the beginning of one of the state's largest religious pilgrimages. Thousands of devotees from across West Bengal and neighbouring states gathered at the renowned Taraknath Temple to commence the holy month of Shravan with prayers and religious rituals.

Addressing devotees and religious leaders during the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to preserving Bengal's religious heritage and transforming Tarakeswar into an internationally recognised pilgrimage destination. He announced an infrastructure development package of approximately ₹15 crore for the comprehensive improvement of the temple precincts and pilgrim facilities.

To facilitate the smooth conduct of the Shravan pilgrimage, the state government has introduced several new initiatives. Service camps will be established at regular intervals along the nearly 30-kilometre pilgrimage route from Sheoraphuli to Tarakeswar, providing drinking water, ORS, first aid, medical assistance and resting facilities for lakhs of devotees carrying holy water to offer at the Taraknath Temple. Police assistance booths, temporary health centres and additional security arrangements have also been deployed to ensure a safe and orderly pilgrimage.

The Chief Minister further announced that, subject to favourable weather conditions, flower petals will be showered from helicopters on devotees every Monday during the holy month of Shravan as a gesture of respect towards the pilgrims undertaking the sacred journey.

Speaking at the inauguration, Adhikari stated that his government aims to provide greater recognition to Bengal's religious traditions while strengthening infrastructure at major places of worship. He emphasised that Tarakeswar Dham would receive sustained attention to improve facilities for pilgrims and preserve its cultural and spiritual significance.

The inauguration of the Shravan Mela marks the beginning of weeks of religious observances at Tarakeswar, with lakhs of Shiva devotees expected to visit the temple throughout the holy month. The enhanced arrangements are expected to significantly improve the pilgrimage experience while reinforcing Tarakeswar's status as one of eastern India's most important centres of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva.
