From Sleeping at Bengaluru Bus Stand to Winning Best Teacher Award Twice: The Unstoppable Journey of Rajashekar Ragati

True dedication turns personal adversity into a powerful catalyst for social change. The journey of Rajashekar Ragati embodies this spirit. Once an impoverished student spending cold nights on the hard benches of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda (Majestic) bus station, he rose against all odds to become a transformative educator, winning the prestigious 'Best Teacher' award twice.

Hailing from an agricultural daily-wage family in Bagalkote district, education was Ragati's sole path out of poverty. Moving to Bengaluru for higher studies with empty pockets, he could not afford rented accommodation. He spent nights sleeping at the central bus station and used public facilities to freshen up before heading to class. Despite acute hunger and uncertainty, his commitment to learning remained unshaken.

Upon qualifying as a government school teacher, he turned his lived hardships into boundless empathy for underprivileged students:

○ Revamping School Infrastructure: Refusing to accept decaying school conditions, he mobilized personal savings and community donors to paint classrooms, set up smart learning boards, and establish a vibrant children's library.

○ Tackling Dropout Rates: Visiting the doorsteps of rural daily-wage parents, he counseled families directly, successfully bringing dozens of dropout children—particularly young girls—back into formal education.

○ Activity-Based Pedagogy: He abandoned rote learning, introducing visual storytelling, practical science experiments, and language labs that helped rural students master foundational subjects with ease.

○ Nurturing Well-Rounded Students: Beyond academics, he coached village students in public speaking, sports, and creative arts, enabling them to win competitive district and state contests.

Acknowledging his exceptional contribution to rural public education, the state recognized him with the 'Best Teacher Award' twice. Rajashekar Ragati’s life stands as living proof that resilience can triumph over poverty, and that a committed teacher can uplift generations.
