Two-person-deep drop just meters from shore; strong waves add to the risk

KOLLAM: A sudden and steep drop in the seabed is turning Kollam Beach into a major drowning-risk zone, with strong waves further increasing the danger to visitors.

Unlike beaches where the seabed gradually slopes into the sea, the terrain at Kollam reportedly drops sharply like a ‘pit’, reaching a depth of nearly two persons almost immediately after entering the water.

A warning board at the beach states that 40 people have drowned here in the past five years. Over the past decade, the sea has reportedly claimed more than 100 lives at the location.

The number of people rescued, however, is believed to be many times higher. Lifeguards and local fishermen have repeatedly intervened to rescue visitors caught in the strong currents and sudden depth.

The combination of the steep underwater drop, strong waves and sudden changes in depth makes entering the sea particularly hazardous.

Authorities and beach visitors are urged to give serious attention to the warning signs and avoid entering the water in unsafe areas.
