Mumbai CNG, PNG and Auto-Taxi Fares Hiked From September 1, Commuters to Pay More

MUMBAI: Mumbaikars will have to spend more on daily commuting and household fuel from Tuesday, September 1, following an increase in CNG and domestic PNG prices. Autorickshaw and black-and-yellow taxi fares have also been revised across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

CNG Price Increased by ₹2 Per Kg

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by ₹2 per kg, taking the revised price to ₹88 per kg in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

The company has also increased the price of domestic piped natural gas (PNG) by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM).

MGL said the CNG price revision was linked to higher input gas costs and increased dependence on imported spot regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG).

The increase is expected to affect motorists and commercial transport operators across the MMR.

Auto and Taxi Fares Also Revised

Revised autorickshaw and taxi fares have also come into effect from September 1. The minimum autorickshaw fare has increased from ₹26 to ₹27 for the first 1.5 km, while the minimum fare for Mumbai's black-and-yellow taxis has increased from ₹31 to ₹33.

The revised per-kilometre rates are:

• Autorickshaw: ₹18.22 per km, up from ₹17.14
• Black-and-yellow taxi: ₹21.90 per km, up from ₹20.66

The revised fares apply across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Mumbai and surrounding areas.

Drivers Given Time to Recalibrate Meters

According to transport authorities, drivers can charge the revised fares after recalibrating their electronic meters. Until the meters are updated, passengers will be charged according to the applicable RTO-approved fare provisions.

Drivers have been given time until the end of November to complete the meter recalibration. Those who fail to comply within the stipulated period may face action as per the applicable rules.

Impact on Daily Commuters

The fare revision means higher transportation expenses for passengers who regularly use autorickshaws and taxis. The impact could be particularly noticeable for office-goers, students and other commuters who depend on multiple rides every day.

With CNG prices also rising, transport operators are facing higher fuel costs at the same time that passengers are dealing with revised fares.

The latest fare revision comes around 18 months after the previous major increase, which came into effect in February 2025.

For Mumbai residents, the September 1 revisions mean changes in the cost of CNG, domestic PNG and daily road transportation. The overall impact on household budgets will depend on individual fuel and commuting requirements.
