Nagendra's Exit Question: Resignation Reports Put Karnataka Government Under Fresh Pressure

Karnataka's B Nagendra has come under renewed political pressure after reports that the minister had offered to resign were followed by a direct denial from him. Reports on Wednesday said Nagendra had conveyed to Chief Minister D K Shivakumar that he was willing to step down amid renewed pressure over alleged irregularities in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. Nagendra subsequently rejected the reports, saying there had been no discussion about his resignation.

The development comes as the BJP intensifies its campaign for Nagendra's removal. The party has announced a 170-km padayatra from Raichur to Ballari beginning September 1, turning the controversy into a statewide political mobilisation issue. The Central Bureau of Investigation has also sought the Governor's sanction to prosecute Nagendra in connection with the case.

The competing accounts leave Nagendra's immediate Cabinet status uncertain. What is established is the continuing investigative and political pressure. What remains unconfirmed is whether Nagendra will actually resign.

The issue is also unfolding alongside a broader Cabinet-revamp discussion. Shivakumar is scheduled to travel to Delhi and has said the government will induct a woman minister shortly. Reports indicate that a minor reshuffle could involve changes involving at least two ministers.

The political significance therefore extends beyond Nagendra's individual position. A resignation could reduce immediate pressure on the government before the BJP's planned mobilisation. Retaining him, however, would give the Opposition a continuing issue around which to organise.

The legal and political questions must remain separate: allegations and pending proceedings are not findings of guilt. The immediate story is now whether political pressure translates into a Cabinet decision.
