One Day, a Son Becomes His Father

Sometimes the deepest sorrows of life do not arrive with a loud announcement. They quietly enter our lives and change us forever. Losing a parent is one such moment. No matter how old we become, the absence of a father leaves a silence that words can hardly describe.
There was a time when I would leave our home in Bathinda and travel to Mumbai, while my father remained behind. I always carried a quiet confidence that whenever I returned, he would be there. His presence was a kind of invisible security—a feeling I never fully understood while he was alive.
Then one evening, everything changed.
The house was the same, the door was the same, and the road was the same, but my father was no longer there. For the first time, I understood what true loneliness meant. The real pain of losing someone does not end with the final farewell. It begins afterward, in the empty rooms, the unanswered questions and the silence where a familiar voice once existed.
Even after crossing the age of fifty, I felt like a helpless child. Somewhere inside, I wished I could hear my father’s voice just once more.
A father’s departure is not simply the loss of a person. Along with him goes a certain sense of security—the comforting belief that someone is always waiting for you, caring for you and asking whether you have reached safely.
But fathers leave behind more than memories. They leave their values, discipline, wisdom, dreams and way of living. These become a part of their children and continue into the next generation.
Perhaps this is when a son slowly begins to become his father.
He remembers his father’s words, follows his principles and tries to pass the same values to his own children.
A father’s story, therefore, never truly ends. Only its narrator changes.
Today, I feel that my father is still with me—in my thoughts, my words, my values and every act that reflects his teachings.
His journey ended, but his legacy continues through me.
And perhaps that is a son’s truest tribute to his father. 🙏
