A 50-year-old woman, identified as Vineeta, died in a tragic lift accident at Sai Surya Apartment in Market Centre, Ongole, in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district.

According to reports, the incident occurred when Vineeta was stepping out of the lift. The elevator suddenly moved downward while its doors were still open, trapping her between the lift and the floor.

A video of the incident shows Vineeta inside the lift along with another woman and a child. The woman and the child appear to exit normally. However, when Vineeta attempted to step out, the lift suddenly dropped without warning.

The woman accompanying her immediately tried to help and pressed the lift buttons in an attempt to bring the elevator back up. As Vineeta remained trapped, residents rushed to the spot after hearing screams for help.

Apartment residents eventually managed to rescue Vineeta and rushed her to a hospital. However, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

The incident has raised serious concerns over lift safety, maintenance and the need for regular inspection of elevators in residential buildings. Authorities are expected to look into the circumstances that led to the lift malfunction.

The incident also highlights the dangers passengers can face when a lift moves while its doors are open, underlining the importance of proper maintenance and functioning safety mechanisms.
