Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Announces 50,000 CCTV Cameras and One Lakh Streetlights for Women's Safety
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said that 50,000 CCTV cameras and one lakh streetlights are being installed across the capital to strengthen women's safety in public spaces.
Speaking to students at Maitreyi College during its diamond jubilee celebrations on September 30, Gupta said women's safety should not come at the cost of their freedom. She stressed that women should not face restrictions on where they go, what they wear or when they return home because of security concerns.
Her remarks came amid renewed public concern about women's safety following protests over an alleged sexual assault involving a minor in South Delhi.
Focus on Safety and Social Responsibility
Gupta said efforts to improve women's safety should also include teaching boys and men about respect, responsibility and appropriate behaviour, rather than placing the entire burden of safety on women.
The announced measures include expanding CCTV surveillance and improving street lighting in public areas. Better lighting can improve visibility on roads and in public spaces after dark, while CCTV footage may assist authorities in investigating reported incidents.
Review of Safety Around Colleges
Separately, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu met principals of women's colleges and officials to review safety concerns around educational institutions and student travel routes.
College representatives raised concerns about poorly lit roads, unsafe parks, inadequate CCTV coverage, encroached footpaths and weak last-mile connectivity between colleges and Metro stations. Officials were directed to examine improvements in street lighting, CCTV coverage, police patrolling and public transport access.
Implementation and Public Safety
The effectiveness of the announced measures will depend on their implementation, the locations selected for installations and regular maintenance. Improving public transport, police response and the safety of routes frequently used by students will also remain important.
Conclusion
The announcements by the Delhi Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor place infrastructure, policing and public awareness at the centre of efforts to improve women's safety. Progress will depend on coordinated action by the relevant agencies and the effective implementation of the proposed measures.
