Concerns Raised Over Alleged Misuse of ST Certificates in West Bengal

West Bengal: Concerns have been raised over the alleged misuse of Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates in West Bengal for accessing reservation benefits in government employment, medical and other educational admissions, and various government welfare schemes.

ST certificates enable eligible members of Scheduled Tribes to access reservation and other benefits provided under government rules. Allegations of fake or improperly obtained certificates have raised concerns among genuine ST candidates, who fear that fraudulent claims could affect their access to jobs, education and other opportunities.

A survey report has reportedly suggested that a significant number of employment and educational opportunities may have been accessed using allegedly fraudulent ST certificates. A specific claim of at least 10,000 affected opportunities should, however, be confirmed through the original survey report or an official investigation before being presented as an established figure.

Minister Khudiram Tuddu has reportedly called for strict action against people found using fake ST certificates. Proposed measures reportedly include cancellation of fraudulent certificates and recovery of benefits or salaries obtained through such certificates, along with applicable interest, subject to legal and administrative procedures.

The alleged misuse of ST certificates has become a concern for genuine ST candidates, who argue that fraudulent claims could undermine the purpose of reservation and affect the rights and opportunities of eligible beneficiaries.

There are also allegations that some individuals may have used ST certificates to access loans, subsidies and other government facilities. Such claims, particularly those concerning specific individuals, businesses or tea-garden owners, should be supported by official records or verified investigations before publication.

Separately, Minister Arjun Singh has reportedly announced steps regarding the reopening of tea gardens for their original owners within 30 days. Tea-garden operations have also been affected by issues involving workers, management and ownership, and further details will depend on official decisions.

The issue highlights the importance of strict certificate verification, transparent investigations and timely action against fraudulent claims while ensuring that genuine ST beneficiaries are not denied their lawful rights.
