Kaziranga Eco-Sensitive Zone: Development Must Not Come at the Cost of Wildlife Protection

GUWAHATI: Kaziranga is more than a tourist destination. It is one of Assam’s most important ecological treasures and is home to the iconic one-horned rhinoceros.

Reports and discussions surrounding a possible reduction in the eco-sensitive zone around Kaziranga from 10 kilometres to 1 kilometre have raised concerns among environmentalists and citizens. Any such proposal needs to be examined carefully on the basis of official notifications, scientific assessments and its potential impact on wildlife and local communities.

The Five-Star Question

The debate has become sharper amid discussions surrounding luxury tourism and hotel projects in the Kaziranga region.

The question is not whether Assam should develop. It needs investment, employment, better infrastructure and sustainable tourism. But development should also take into account the ecological importance of the Kaziranga landscape.

A hotel can potentially be planned in a suitable location. A road can potentially be redesigned. Tourism plans can be modified when necessary. However, the loss or fragmentation of an important wildlife corridor can have long-term consequences that cannot easily be reversed.

Show Us the Science

If any reduction in the eco-sensitive zone is proposed or considered necessary for development, the government should clearly explain why the proposed limit is appropriate.

Questions also remain about which wildlife corridors could be affected, what scientific studies have been conducted and what safeguards would be put in place to protect wildlife during floods, seasonal movement and migration.

Residents and the wider public deserve answers supported by scientific assessments and transparent information rather than assurances alone.

Kaziranga's wildlife cannot participate in decisions about construction or infrastructure. The responsibility for balancing development and conservation therefore rests with policymakers, authorities, businesses and citizens.

Assam Deserves Development. Kaziranga Deserves Protection.

The choice should not be presented simply as a conflict between jobs and wildlife or between tourism and conservation.

The larger challenge is to create a development model that supports economic opportunity while protecting the ecological systems on which Assam's environment and communities depend.

Assam can pursue a stronger economy without weakening its natural heritage. Kaziranga's value lies precisely in its unique ecosystem and wildlife.

Any decision affecting its protective framework should therefore be based on transparent evidence, careful environmental assessment and long-term conservation priorities.
