NIA Cracks Down: 7 Foreign Nationals Held Under UAPA Over Myanmar Links, Drone Plot

New Delhi | March 17, 2026
In a significant national security development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken seven foreign nationals into custody under the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The arrests are linked to alleged suspicious activities involving cross-border movements into Myanmar and the procurement of drones from Europe.

Arrests Across Multiple Cities
According to officials, the accused—six Ukrainian nationals and one American citizen—were detained from various locations, including airports in Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata, while attempting to leave India. The coordinated operation highlights the seriousness of the case and the scale of surveillance involved.

Serious Allegations
Preliminary findings by the NIA suggest that the group:
Entered India and travelled to Mizoram, a sensitive border state
Illegally crossed into Myanmar
Held meetings with ethnic armed groups across the border
Facilitated or planned the delivery of drones from Europe, possibly for use in cross-border operations
Investigators suspect that these activities could be part of a larger international network, raising concerns about potential threats to India’s internal security.

Legal Proceedings
The accused have been booked under Section 18 of the UAPA, which deals with conspiracy related to terrorist acts. A Delhi court has remanded them to 11 days of NIA custody, allowing investigators to question them further and uncover possible links.

Defence Response
Legal representatives of the accused have contested the arrests, arguing that due process may not have been fully followed. They have also cited concerns regarding international legal norms, including provisions under the Vienna Convention.

Strategic Concerns
This case has drawn attention to several critical issues:
The growing use of drones in covert and cross-border activities
The vulnerability of India’s Northeast border regions
Possible links between foreign nationals and ethnic conflicts in Myanmar

National Security Implications
Security agencies are increasingly wary of evolving threats that combine technology, international actors, and border vulnerabilities. The alleged involvement of foreign nationals in such activities underscores the need for tighter monitoring and intelligence coordination.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to reveal more details about the network, funding sources, and intended use of the drones. The case remains under close watch due to its serious national security implications.
