Nine Tamil Nadu Police Officers Convicted for 2020 Custodial Deaths of Father and Son

A significant ruling emerged from Tamil Nadu on Monday as a district court found nine police officers guilty of the custodial deaths of a father and son duo at the Santhankulam police station in Thoothukudi district. This shocking incident, which transpired in June 2020, has drawn attention to police brutality and sparked widespread outrage across the nation.

The tragic events began on June 18, 2020, when P Jeyaraj, aged 58, and his son J Benniks, aged 31, were arrested in Sattankulam for purportedly breaching COVID-19 lockdown regulations. Following their arrest, the duo was taken to the local police station where they faced brutal treatment; reports indicate that they were beaten and tortured throughout the night. The very next day, they were remanded to judicial custody and transferred to jail, but their health rapidly deteriorated.

Subsequently, both father and son were taken to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, Benniks passed away on June 22, 2020, followed by his father Jeyaraj just a day later on June 23. Their untimely deaths ignited mass protests and heightened scrutiny surrounding police conduct in the country, prompting a national conversation on the need for accountability in law enforcement.

On Monday, Judge G Muthukumaran presided over the case in the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai and convicted several officers involved in the incident. Those found guilty include inspector S Sridhar, sub-inspectors P Raghu Ganesh and K Balakrishnan, head constables S Murugan and A Saamidurai, alongside constables M Muthuraj, S Chelladurai, Thomas X, and S Veilumuthu. Notably, a tenth officer, special sub-inspector Pauldurai, has passed away due to COVID-19 complications prior to the court’s decision.

The sentencing of the convicted officers is scheduled for March 30, a development that the victims’ families and activists are eagerly awaiting. In a notable directive, the court has also mandated that the Union and state governments provide comprehensive reports about the health status, salary statements, and asset details of the nine convicted officers. This ruling not only highlights the grave implications of police misconduct but also is a step towards ensuring justice for the affected families.

The case of Jeyaraj and Benniks serves as a stark reminder of the systemic issues relating to law enforcement in India. As the legal proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how this will influence broader policies regarding police accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights. The public’s demand for justice in this high-profile case may catalyze significant changes in how law enforcement interactions with civilians are managed, potentially leading to reforms aimed at preventing such tragedies from recurring in the future.
