In Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, a tense situation unfolded over the weekend as protests erupted following the death of notorious cow vigilante Chandrashekhar, popularly recognized as ‘Farsa Wale Baba.’ The Uttar Pradesh Police reported that they have detained 19 individuals for blocking the busy Delhi-Agra highway and engaging in violent acts in the wake of his demise.
Chandrashekhar’s supporters alleged that he was killed by cattle smugglers, igniting fury among his followers who gathered en masse on the national highway. However, police officials clarified that the vigilante died in a tragic road accident after being struck by a truck in dense fog, a narrative that has not satisfied his supporters who believe there is more to the story.
The protests escalated as thousands of people congregated on the highway, coinciding with President Droupadi Murmu’s three-day visit in nearby Govardhan. Authorities reported that the demonstrators caused significant disruption, blocking traffic for several kilometers. The situation intensified when protesters began throwing stones at law enforcement officers attempting to restore order, leading to injuries among several police personnel and damage to a police outpost along with government vehicles.
The police have initiated legal action against a key figure in the protests, Daksh Chaudhary, along with his associates, referencing the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Chaudhary, a known history-sheeter from Ghaziabad, is accused of previous involvement in vandalism and vehicle theft, raising concerns about the organized nature of the protests. Deputy Inspector General of Police Shailesh Pandey admitted that the situation required the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd, signifying the level of unrest.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in Uttar Pradesh surrounding cow protection and the role of vigilante groups. While cow protection has become a contentious issue in India, the clash between law enforcement and citizens raises questions about the balance between civil rights and public safety. As the investigation continues, the local communities remain on edge, grappling with the implications of this incident.
