The ongoing political tension in India escalated on Monday as the opposition coalition, known as the INDIA bloc, called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The demand stems from allegations of mishandling the recent National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations, which they claim have betrayed the trust of millions of students.
At a press conference attended by prominent leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Trinamool Congress head Mamata Banerjee, the coalition criticized the government’s management of the education sector. Kharge expressed that the Education Minister’s oversight led to a significant mishap, affecting the futures of over 22 lakh candidates who sat for the NEET exam on May 3. The examination was abruptly canceled by the National Testing Agency on May 12 due to allegations of a paper leak, prompting an urgent need for a re-test set for June 21.
Kharge further emphasized that the INDIA bloc is not only concerned about the NEET controversy but also about broader issues such as the current economic crisis, rising unemployment rates, inflation, and the challenges faced by farmers. He urged the central government to convene an all-party meeting to address these pressing matters, which he described as critical to the welfare of the nation. The alliance leaders vowed to meet every two months to maintain their collaborative efforts in Parliament and ensure that these issues remain at the forefront of political discourse.
The backdrop of this controversy includes rising frustrations among students and parents regarding examination integrity. The recurring allegations of paper leaks and irregularities, alongside the notion of granting grace marks, have created an atmosphere of distrust around the educational processes that affect the youth’s academic and professional futures.
As the opposition intensifies its criticism of the ruling government, the INDIA bloc is preparing to approach the Chief Justice of India regarding what they term as ‘vote theft’ and the manipulation of electoral rolls. This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to galvanize support ahead of upcoming elections, highlighting perceived injustices that could sway public opinion against the government.
