Mumbai, April 3 (IPU Media Update News): Renowned Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma’s iconic 1890s oil painting,” Yashoda and Krishna “, fetched a price of ₹167.2 crores at a live auction held by Saffronart in Mumbai on Wednesday (April 1st). This masterpiece has set a new record.
Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla, head of the Serum Institute of India, purchased the painting. Saffronart, the auction house that put the painting up for sale, had estimated that it would fetch between ₹80 and ₹120 crores.
However, shattering previous records, this painting has emerged as the highest-selling Indian artwork to date. Speaking after acquiring the piece, Poonawalla remarked, “I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to purchase and preserve a painting by Raja Ravi Varma, which is a national treasure. I will ensure that it remains accessible for the public to view.
