Rebel TMC Faction Declared Main Opposition in West Bengal: Ritabrata Banerjee

In a significant political development in West Bengal, expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Ritabrata Banerjee announced on Wednesday that the rebel faction he leads has been recognized as the main opposition party in the state assembly. This bold claim comes after a proposal by 58 of the TMC’s 80 MLAs was reportedly accepted by Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, according to sources from ANI.

Banerjee’s assertion follows the submission of a list by the dissident MLAs to the Speaker, which outlined their leadership structure. The list, presented without the party’s letterhead, names Mamata Banerjee as the party leader, with Ritabrata Banerjee as the leader of the opposition, alongside Sheuli Saha, Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha, and Sabina Yasmin as deputy leaders. This unprecedented move demonstrates a challenge to the authority of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who has publicly backed Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the opposition leader in the assembly.

The tensions within the TMC have escalated recently, especially after allegations surfaced regarding the validity of signatures on documents submitted to the Speaker for Chattopadhyay’s appointment. Ritabrata Banerjee and his ally Sandipan Saha have claimed that these signatures were forged, raising serious questions about the legitimacy of the party’s internal decisions. Notably, Sandipan Saha, who represents Entally, was expelled from the TMC just days before these events unfolded.

Adding to the political turbulence, TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee reiterated the party’s support for Chattopadhyay in a letter addressed to Speaker Bose, thereby solidifying the party’s stance amidst growing dissent. The ongoing conflict within the TMC could have broader implications for the party’s unity and its future in West Bengal, especially as the state gears up for the upcoming elections.

This situation reflects a critical juncture for the TMC, which has long been a dominant force in West Bengal politics under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. As divisions within the party become more pronounced, the political landscape may shift significantly, allowing rival factions to gain traction. The challenges posed by this internal strife could embolden opposition parties and reshape the dynamics of governance in the state.
