Reflecting on 12 Days in March: A Journey Through Contemporary Indian News

During the tumultuous period of the Emergency from 1975 to 1977, the Indian media faced one of its sternest tests. A few brave newspapers and magazines sought to navigate through the strict censorship imposed by the government. The Indian Express, for instance, famously filled its editorial columns with blank spaces, a bold statement that didn’t escape the notice of censors. Meanwhile, the Economic and Political Weekly in Bombay cleverly introduced a segment named ‘Clippings’, showcasing excerpts from other publications that were largely immune to direct censorship.

A notable entry from their December 4, 1975 issue documented a statement by Sunjay Gandhi regarding flood relief in Tamil Nadu. He remarked, “I see smiling faces here… much of our troubles would be over if only all of us keep smiling.” This reflection on human resilience amid adversity reminds us of the power of media to encapsulate public sentiment, even in oppressive times.

Fast forward to the present, India stands as the world’s largest and oldest democracy, boasting a vibrant media landscape. Despite the absence of overt censorship, the sheer volume of news can be overwhelming, making it challenging for citizens to stay informed. In such a fast-paced environment, maintaining a journal or diary on mobile devices can be an invaluable resource to track significant events and personal reflections.

Recently, I curated a selection of news highlights and social media snippets from a bustling 12-day period in March. These captured moments provide an insightful glimpse into the dynamics of contemporary Indian society, showcasing political developments, social movements, and cultural events. Each headline tells a story, resonating with the hopes and concerns of our diverse populace.

In an era where information flows incessantly, it’s crucial to pause and reflect on the context and implications of the stories we consume. From economic policies to grassroots activism, every piece of news contributes to the larger narrative of our nation. By revisiting and documenting these events, we engage in a collective act of remembrance and understanding, vital for the health of our democracy.
