Rescue Operation Saves 24 Indian Sailors from US-Targeted Tanker Off Oman

In a dramatic rescue mission on Monday, 24 Indian sailors were saved from the tanker Marivex, which came under fire from the United States military off the coast of Oman. The incident has raised concerns about maritime safety in the region, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions related to Iran’s oil trade.

The US military launched an attack on the Marivex, a Palau-flagged vessel, as part of its enforcement of a maritime blockade aimed at restricting Iranian shipping. The Central Command of the US stated that the tanker had breached this blockade while attempting to navigate towards an Iranian port. At the time of the strike, the Marivex was reportedly unladen, escalating fears about the potential hazards at sea.

This vessel had previously been subjected to US sanctions back in December due to its alleged ties to Iran’s oil sector amidst the broader geopolitical conflict in West Asia. The tanker was among the few ships that successfully exited the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz on April 9, following a ceasefire declaration, highlighting the precarious nature of maritime navigation in these waters.

Shortly after the attack, a message attributed to Manoj Yadav, the General Secretary of the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, indicated that the Marivex was in dire straits. The message detailed that the vessel was taking on water due to damage to its engine room from the missile strike, leading to fears of it sinking. Compounding the situation, a fire erupted on board, and the crew reported that the lifeboats on one side of the ship were rendered inaccessible.

Despite a nearby US warship’s presence, the sailors expressed frustration over a lack of assistance during the critical moments following the missile strike. Eventually, the crew was airlifted by helicopter and transported to safety on Masirah Island, marking a tense chapter in an already volatile maritime environment.

The rescue operation underscores the risks faced by seafarers operating in politically charged waters, as they navigate not only the physical challenges of the sea but also the complexities of international relations. The plight of these Indian sailors serves as a stark reminder of the precariousness of maritime operations amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
