Revolt Within TMC: 20 MPs Pledge Allegiance to NDA Amid Internal Strife

In a surprising political twist, a faction of 20 Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has declared their support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This group, led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, submitted a formal letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday, effectively signaling a significant shift within the party that has been at the forefront of West Bengal politics.

The TMC, founded and led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, currently holds a total of 28 seats in the Lok Sabha following the recent 2024 elections. Initially securing 29 seats, the party lost one due to the untimely death of Basirhat MP, necessitating a bye-election. This development comes at a time when the TMC appears to be facing increasing internal discord, particularly following a mass rebellion among its MLAs.

Just days before the MPs’ announcement, a staggering 58 out of 80 TMC MLAs chose to side with the expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee, electing him as the new leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. This move has been perceived as a direct challenge to Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, especially as she has endorsed Sovandeb Chattopadhyay for the position. The political landscape in West Bengal is becoming increasingly complicated, with factions within the TMC emerging and seeking to reshape their alliances.

The meeting that led to this unprecedented decision was held at the residence of Bhupendra Yadav, a Union Minister and BJP observer for West Bengal, in New Delhi. Notably, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was also in attendance, indicating the BJP’s active interest in courting TMC dissidents. This alliance could potentially bolster the NDA’s standing in West Bengal, where the BJP has been striving to expand its influence in opposition to the TMC’s long-standing dominance.

This latest development raises questions about the future of TMC and its ability to maintain unity amid growing dissent. With many former allies now turning towards the BJP, Mamata Banerjee’s party might be forced to reassess its strategies and alliances as it seeks to retain control over West Bengal’s political narrative. The evolving situation promises to be a major point of interest for political observers as it unfolds.
