Sensex Crashes, Rupee Hits Record Low as Oil Shock Rattles India

India’s financial markets ended the fiscal year on a deeply volatile note, with benchmark indices posting their worst annual performance since 2020, as surging crude oil prices, foreign investor exits, and geopolitical tensions triggered widespread panic across equities, currency, and bond markets.
The BSE Sensex plunged over 1,600 points, while the Nifty 50 slipped below key support zones, wiping out nearly ₹9–10 lakh crore in investor wealth in a single trading session. Banking, IT, and export-linked counters led the selloff as institutional investors rushed to reduce exposure amid fears of prolonged global instability.
Adding to the pressure, the Indian rupee breached the historic 95-per-dollar mark, marking its worst fiscal-year decline in more than a decade. Currency traders pointed to relentless foreign outflows, rising import costs, and elevated oil prices as the key drivers behind the rupee’s sharp depreciation.
In commodities, Brent crude hovered above $108–115 per barrel, as the ongoing West Asia conflict raised concerns over supply disruptions and higher freight costs. Analysts warn that if crude sustains above current levels, India could face renewed inflationary stress, especially in fuel, logistics, and manufacturing sectors.
Despite the sharp correction, market strategists believe the current selloff may create long-term accumulation opportunities in defence, metals, and select PSU banking names, provided geopolitical risks begin to ease in the coming weeks. However, volatility is expected to remain elevated, with traders closely watching crude movement, RBI intervention, and foreign institutional activity.
Editorial View
Today’s market bloodbath underlines one key reality: India’s growth story remains strong, but global shocks can still overpower domestic resilience in the short term. For investors, the next few sessions may define whether this is a panic bottom—or the beginning of a deeper macro reset
