Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Kerala, Signaling Start of Rainy Season

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala, a significant marker that heralds the onset of the four-month rainy season across the country. This year’s monsoon has made its debut three days later than the typical onset date of June 1, a slight delay that reflects the variability often seen in weather patterns.

Initially, the IMD had forecasted that the monsoon would hit Kerala by May 26. However, as the date approached, the agency revised its expectations, acknowledging on May 29 that the anticipated onset was unlikely within that four-day window. This was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of monsoons, which are crucial for agriculture and water supply in India.

The IMD later adjusted its forecast on Tuesday, predicting that the monsoon would officially arrive by June 4, and on Thursday, it confirmed that the monsoon had indeed progressed into various regions, including the remaining areas of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep region, all of Kerala and Mahe, as well as parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, it has made its way into the southeast Bay of Bengal and further regions in the west-central, east-central, and northeast Bay of Bengal.

With the arrival of the monsoon, weather patterns are expected to shift, and conditions are favorable for the monsoon to spread further into Goa, parts of Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, as well as more areas of Karnataka and the remaining regions of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days. The southwest monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September, is a crucial period for farmers and agriculture, providing much-needed rainfall.

The timing of the monsoon is vital for farmers who depend on this seasonal rain to cultivate crops that are central to India’s food supply. As such, monitoring the progress of the monsoon is of paramount importance, and its timely arrival can significantly affect agricultural productivity and the economy.
